Activity Title

Surgical Approaches to Lung Transplantation

Program Goals

Lung transplantation surgical techniques have been well standardized for the past three decades. In this educational activity attendees will learn of current standard surgical techniques for lung transplantation as practiced at Temple Health, as well as considerations regarding inherent limitations, evolving surgical options, and future directions for improved outcomes.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for medical professionals who have a clinical interest in the management of lung transplant patients as seen by the following medical specialists: Pulmonologists, Surgeons, Respiratory Physiotherapists, Respiratory Therapists (hospital, home), Home Healthcare Providers, Critical Care Medicine Specialists, Internal Medicine Specialists, Primary Care Physicians, Advanced Practice Nurses, and Nurse Practitioners.

Learning Objectives

After completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the current standard surgical techniques for lung transplantation and their limitations.
  • Describe double lung translation survival statistics with different surgical approaches.
  • Explain the challenges with lobar lung transplant and the TUH protocol described in this activity.
  • Define the benefits of extracorporeal circulatory support (ECS) in lung transplantation.
